Fueling your home with propane gas can have some benefits that you may not have considered. For many people, propane gas is more accessible than other fuels and may also have a price advantage, but there is more to consider than just the price when considering using propane as your primary fuel source.

Location of Your Home

Where you live can have an enormous influence on your decision to use propane fuel in your home or not. Areas prone to storms and power outages can benefit from propane gas services in a couple of ways.

Heating your home with propane does require electricity to ignite the burner on the heater, but there are some furnace options that use a battery backup to provide the tiny spark that is needed to get the burner going. If you live where power outages are a problem, you should talk to your heating contractor about installing a heater that allows these options so your home stays warm during power outages in the winter.

Clear Burning Gas

Propane gas is one of the cleanest-burning fuels currently being used in homes, and if you are looking for a fuel with a low impact on the environment, it could be a good choice. There are emissions given off by the exhaust of a propane heating system, but they are lower than fuel oil and, in some cases, even lower than wood-burning stoves and fireplaces.

The carbon level is lower than many other fuels and the hydrogen content is higher, so carbon monoxide levels can be reduced by using propane gas in homes and vehicles very effectively.

Whole House Fuel

Another thing to consider is that using propane gas in your home can mean only needing one fuel in the house to fuel everything. Gas stoves, heating systems, and water heaters are all available that run on propane gas for residential and commercial use. In your home, you may find that the cost of propane is lower than using several different fuels if the price of propane gas is low, but be sure to check the prices against other fuels before deciding to switch your home over.

If you are not currently using propane gas in your home, you may need to change appliances and the heating system, but if it is time to consider upgrading those things anyway, it may be a good time to look at your options and make a change that can save you money long term.
